According to Ayurveda ‘unwholesome diet’ is one of the main causes of diseases. We find the need to ‘detox’ because our food habits are for most part unhealthy and unwholesome. What if we corrected that? Re-learned ‘eating food’ and started all that by a simple cleansing diet based on a 5000 year old science called, Ayurveda! Now, the authentic Ayurveda cleanse called ‘Panchakarma’ is best done with professionals who help you with detoxifying massages, oil-baths, and special ‘churnas’ (powdered herb mixtures) added to your drinks and foods. In absence of all of that and yet keeping the essence of the tradition, the following 7 day diet will be nutritionally sound, practical and economical.
So, here is to being healthy through our stomachs, without starving! According to Ayurveda there is a specific time for every food and only certain foods can be combined. Also, preparing and eating the food fresh and while paying a lot of attention to your meal is key (not in front of the computer or T.V). Before starting on this 7 day diet, there are few pointers that you will have to keep in and follow for 1 week prior. Please avoid all kinds of processed foods (ready to eat snacks) and bakery item like (bread, bagels, cookies, cakes, doughnuts) and sweets, chocolates and candies of any kind for 1 week prior and during this diet. Instead of bread you can try whole grain tortillas. Also avoid deep fried foods and food of any kind from restaurants.
The most important ‘do not’ is drinking or eating milk and fruit together.
After reading the strict things to avoid, many of you might become apprehensive or worse, think this to be un-manageable but believe me I was in the same boat and yet, I could do it with a little bit of planning.
Imagine this; you don’t need to buy any supplements or herbs from this website or any other! Just lots of organic fresh fruits and vegetables from your local grocery store! For me the most challenging part was not eating dinner !

Also, a few other things to keep in mind will be to try and do it during a relatively less taxing work/personal week. Make sure you have time for light stretching and ½ hour walk during the evening and 5 minutes of breathing exercises every day.
Here is a great tea recipe which you can try right away!
½ tsp. Fennel seeds
½ tsp. Cumin seeds
½ tsp. Coriander seeds
3 cups water
Bring the water to a rolling boil, add the seeds and let it boil further for 30 seconds. Cover and steep for 5 minutes. Strain and enjoy!
Important Pointers and Recipes
Wake up Routine: Start the day with 2 cups luke-warm water which you should drink squatting down, preferably in a yoga-pose called ‘Malasana’. If that is physically not possible you can also sit on a chair and drink the water.
Malasana/Garland Pose: Stand with your feet more than your hip width distance apart and squat down. Try to place your heels on the floor but if you can’t place a rolled up blanket underneath your heels for support. Press your elbows against the inner knees, keep your spine tall and hold the water bottle with both your hands. Gulp the water as quickly as possible without pausing in the middle.

• Flexes the hip joint
• Stretches the hamstrings
If your stomach holds excess ‘pitta’, you might feel like throwing up and it is o.k. to do so since your stomach is still empty. After, 15 minutes you can sip on some plain water.
If you are on any kind of medication or feeling unwell please check with your physician before starting the diet. If in the middle of the diet you start feeling weak or light headed please stop and consult your physician immediately. Please avoid engaging in excessive physical or mentally stressful activity for the detox week. Try practicing meditation for 15 minutes every day. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Free drinks and fruits which you can have anytime of the day; ½ hour before or after the specified meals
• Coconut water
• Thin buttermilk: Add 1 cup water to 2 tbsp. probiotic curds (beaten), spiced with black salt and cumin powder to taste.
• Lemon water with 1 tsp. honey
• Any cut fruit
• ¼ cup mixed nuts
You can change the meal times and rotate the meals according to what best suits your schedule but,
• Keep 1-2 hours gap in between meals
• If you are changing the meals, make sure to eat the planned amount of fruits and vegetables for the day
• Make sure to eat Oats in the morning
• Try to include a light walk or stretching and yoga
• Drink only soup in the evening
Once you have completed the seven days you definitely deserve a big pat on the back!! Also please try and avoid going back to your regular eating habits right away. Instead practice the ‘1 week prior to the detox’ eating. Avoid processed foods, bakery food items and also restaurant food. Your stomach has come a long way and now is clean and healthy, keep it that way!
