Flaxseeds are linked to various health benefits and are known to help control blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, inflammation and hot flushes. The three ingredients which provide health advantages within flaxseeds are omega-3 fatty acids, lignans (which are plant phytoestrogens) and soluble and insoluble fibers. To gain full health advantages of ‘flaxseeds’, ground flaxseeds are considered a better choice since, sometimes whole flaxseeds may pass through your intestines undigested and flax seed oil (being a product of flaxseed) has only a part of the seed. With all the health benefits it is easy to think of flaxseed as a ‘super food’ but what it really is, is a great food choice to be included in an overall healthy diet. According to the Flax Council of Canada, the recommended intake is not to exceed 1-2 tablespoons a day. Ground or milled flaxseed can be easily added to muffins,breads, homemade sauces,dips, chutneys, breakfast cereal or soups!
