Khichadi recipe

According to Ayurveda, split moong dal is considered very nutritious for the calming effect it has on all three ‘doshas’ (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). It is relatively easy to digest and when cooked with appropriate spices it is considered very nourishing.
Basmati/Sona Masoori rice ¾ cup
Split moong bean ½ cup
Olive Oil/ Ghee 2 tsp.
Cumin seeds 1tsp
Hing/Asafoetida 1/4 tsp.
Ginger (grated) ½ tsp.
Mustard seeds ½ tsp.
Black pepper powder ¼ tsp
Turmeric powder ¼ tsp.
Cinnamon stick-1 inch
Salt to taste

Rinse the dal and rice together with water in a colander and set aside. Heat the oil/ghee in a thick bottom skillet; add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they start popping add the hing, pepper powder, ginger, cloves, cinnamon and turmeric. Add the washed dal and rice immediately after and sauté for 30 seconds. Add boiling hot water, salt to taste and cover and cook for 30 minutes while occasionally stirring. The rice and dal should be cooked soft. Garnish with chopped cilantro leaves (optional) serve hot.
