What is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo (“The Fifth of May” in Spanish) is a Mexican holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5th 1862. This battle is of special significance to the Mexican community, as it brought them an unexpected victory against the much larger and better trained French army, who aimed to invade Mexico as a means to collect on war debt.

Cinco de Mayo is not only celebrated in Mexico, but also in many cities worldwide with a large Mexican population. Parades, dancing and a full spread of authentic Mexican food (tacos and salsas among others) are a common scene on this commemorative day. Many Mexican restaurants also bring in Mariachi bands to compliment the festivities.
